Italy goes big to save Venice as it sinks into the sea

A multibillion-dollar flood-prevention system will be put in place starting next year, a decade after the project began.

Venetians have been coping with tidal flooding, or ?acqua alta,? for centuries. A recent study suggests the problem may be worsening faster than previously believed.

But a multibillion-dollar system to be implemented starting next year could help prevent major flooding, according to two engineers who presented the project yesterday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, Mass.

According to scientists from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, the University of Miami, and Tele-Rilevamento Europa, an Italian company specializing in ground deformation measurement, the lagoon city is sinking, and won?t stop any time soon.

The team, who published their findings in the March issue of Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, a journal of the American Geophysical Union, combined GPS and space-borne radar information on the lagoon over the past 10 years and came to the conclusion that the city is sinking about two millimeters (0.08 inches) per year. This contradicts previous studies, according to which Venice?s land subsidence, the scientific term that refers to its slow sinking into the waters, had stopped after the city discontinued groundwater pumping in the 1990s, as reported by the Italian newspaper Il Gazzettino.

?It?s a small effect, but it?s important,? lead author Yehuda Bock said in a press release.

In 20 years, the study says, 80 millimeters (3.2 inches) of the lagoon will be taken over by the sea. But that is not the only thing Venetians should be worried about: The city is also tilting eastward, a problem the authors of the research say wasn?t detected in other studies.

So, is Venice doomed? ?Perhaps not. First of all, some question the study?s methodological approach. Pierpaolo Campostrini, director of Corila, a Venice-based research center that studies the lagoon, told Italian daily Corriere della Sera that subsidence may not be constant. ?It could accelerate or slow down,? he said.

Then there is Mose, a complex 5 billion euro ($6.5 billion) flood-prevention system part of which will be operational in 2013 ? 10 years after the project, one of Italy's largest public works, first began. Mose engineers Maria Teresa Brotto and Giovanni Cecconi were at MIT yesterday to present the project, which MIT faculty helped to develop. Mose?s four barriers, placed in the water at the lagoon?s inlets, are designed to rise with the water level, thus protecting the lagoon from flooding.

The goal, Mr. Cecconi said, is ?to keep the water level under 100 centimeters [3.28 feet]? in the city. Critics of the project, however, are concerned about its environmental impact and its maintenance costs, which Ms. Brotto said will amount to 15 to 20 million euros per year.

Adobe unveils CS6 and subscription-based Creative Cloud service, up for pre-order now (video)

adobe creative cloud cs6

Adobe's biggest day of 2012? Go ahead, don't be afraid to call it what it (probably) is. For starters, the outfit is introducing Creative Suite 6 to the world in formal fashion, with 14 applications either unveiled or refreshed. Photoshop CS6 is graduating from beta -- seeing an update that'll provide "near instant results" thanks to the Mercury Graphics Engine -- while Content-Aware Patch and Content-Aware Move are sure to please artists suffering from the "Surely you can fix this in post!" clientele backlash. Adobe Muse is happily entering the scene for the first time, described as a "radical tool that'll enables designers to create and publish HTML5 web sites without writing code." (We're still waiting for Flash to comment.)

In related news, those who aren't up for paying $1,299 (and up) for one of the new suites can try something a bit different: monthly installments. That's coming courtesy of Creative Cloud, an quasi-new initiative designed to harness the power of cloud-based app distribution and streaming in a way that'll make CS6 more accessible than any of the packs that came before. You can tap into CS6's amenities over your broadband connection for $74.99 per month, while those who agree to an annual subscription can get in for $49.99 per month. To be clear, that provides unbridled access to any CS6 tool: Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and AfterEffects, and the rest of the gang. If you're jonesing for Photoshop alone, that one will be available for $29.99 per month (no contract) or $19.99 per month (annual agreement). There's no set release date just yet, but we're told to expect the new goods "within 30 days," and pre-orders seem to be a go. Head on down to the source links for more details on each individual aspect, and catch a promo video for the cloud-based subscription offering just after the break.

Mel Gibson: What I?ll tell my Jewish son about anti-semitic remarks

Mel Gibson is involved in another dustup over alleged anti-semitic remarks, and a Jewish mom contemplates how she'll talk to her son about hatred.

?You Jewish son of a *****,? a boy taunted my brother on the school bus one day as I sat nearby.

Skip to next paragraph Linda K. Wertheimer

Guest blogger

Linda K. Wertheimer, The Boston Globe?s former education editor, writes about religion, education, and family for various publications and blogs at Jewish Muse, A Writer's Blog on Faith and Family. She is a late bloomer:? In her early 40s, she celebrated her adult bat mitzvah, married, and had a son ? in that order.

Recent posts

I was 14, my brother, Kevin, 16. The comment made us seethe, but we let it pass. Then a few weeks later, my family, the only Jewish one in our neighborhood and rural Ohio school, woke up to find swastikas etched in wax on our home windows and cars.

This time, my family did not let it pass. My parents contacted a deputy sheriff, who was friends with my brother through?Boy Scouts. The deputy sheriff went to the doors of the boys we thought were responsible. None admitted to the anti-Semitic act. My family could have told our school, but did not. This was in the late 1970s before it was popular for schools and parents to directly confront anti-Semitism, racism, and other acts of intolerance.

Now a parent, I read about Mel Gibson?s latest insensitive comment about Jews and wonder how to help my son cope with anti-Semitism and prejudice better than I did during my childhood. Mr. Gibson, according to several news reports, quipped, ?Funny, you don?t look Jewish,? in response to a script co-writer?s comment that he was Jewish. Gibson also is in hot water with another Jewish screenwriter for an angry rant that allegedly included anti-Semitic remarks.

I?m heartened that the media is not simply letting Gibson getting away with making offhand comments about Jews.

My 4-year-old son, frankly, would not understand any of this. But at some point in life, he will hear a comment that maligns Jews and wonder why people hate him so. The slur may come from a famous person or worse, from someone he knows.

I do not criticize my parents for not reporting the swastika incident to my school. Our school, at least from the 1970s into the early 1980s, showed little interest in teaching students the importance of respecting all religions. Instead, the school forced religion upon us, through pastors who preached at Easter and Christmas assemblies and through Bible study classes once a week in elementary school.

After our house was covered with swastikas, I was angry and ashamed, ashamed somewhat that I was Jewish, ashamed that I did not know how to fight back against such ignorance. For I think the boy who taunted my brother and the boys who likely put swastikas on our house were more ignorant than anti-Semitic. Gibson, an actor I admittedly adored during his Lethal Weapon days, may be a combination of both.

I look at my son and want to protect him from hearing anything derogatory about his religion, but know I cannot. How should he respond to a direct insult about his faith? Do not shout back, I will urge him as he grows older. But do not take it in silence, either. He should tell the person that it is wrong to malign someone else?s faith that way. If the person brushes him off, he should tell an adult. He should always tell me and his father.

If I sense, as a parent, that some of his peers are not tolerant of other faiths or races, I plan to act to educate rather than focus only on my son. So many resources exist now that did not during my childhood. We can teach our children by showing the 2004 documentary, Paper Clips. Eighth-graders at a rural school in Tennessee collected paper clips for each of the 6 million people killed in the Holocaust. They also created a museum about the Holocaust.

Last night was Yom Hashoah, the international Holocaust Memorial Day. I sang as part of a chorus in a concert at Temple Emunah in Lexington, a Boston suburb. Guest speakers came from Facing History and Ourselves, a course used in schools internationally to teach children how to fight prejudice with compassion. The students learn about the Holocaust and other examples of genocide. They watch videos like one the temple congregation was shown last night ? "The Power of Good" ? about Nicholas Winton, who saved hundreds of Jewish children from the Nazis.

It may be too late for Gibson to reverse many Jews? opinion of him. It?s never too late to teach our children well.

Last night, a soloist sang author and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel?s words:

?The opposite of love is not hate, it?s indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it?s indifference.? The words haunted and comforted me. How much I want to teach my child not to be indifferent. How much I want to make sure that I never stay silent when I must speak.

Ask Engadget: best sub-$150 mechanical keyboard?

Image

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Andrew, who wants to get a proper keyboard, for doing serious business on. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"Hi, I'm thinking about getting a mechanical keyboard for my desktop. I'm a student so I'll need to do a bunch of word-processing and also moderate FPS gaming in the downtime. I've got a budget of $150 and prefer Cherry MX Blue and Brown switches, do you have any suggestions?"

No "thank you?" Man, the kids of today. Anyway, it's a weird coincidence because we've also been pondering swapping out our chiclet daily-driver for something more serious. We played with Matias' One at CES, while Andrew himself has one eye on the Razer Blackwidow or the Das Model S Pro / Stealth. But that's us, what we want to know is what y'all out there are using when it comes to properly made keyboards -- stick your comments below and let's get this doing done.

Triple Crown Betting Information For You

When it comes to betting on horses, the Triple Crown Race in the United States is definitely the biggest event on the continent. It is so big that even people who know nothing about horse racing are likely to place some bets on it, which of course is good news for professional punters (most of the time!). Today we will briefly discuss some general information about Triple Crown and then go into some basic betting strategies for those interested in Triple Crown betting.

About Triple Crown

Triple Crown is actually consist of three different races, during which a horse accumulates points according to its finishes. The three races are the famous Kentucky Derby ? which what they say is the most exciting 2 minutes in sports, and the less well known Belmont Stakes and the Preakness Stakes. All of the races are exclusive to three year old horses.

Those who bet on this type of horse racing, or any of its individual races, have opportunities to bet on many different outcomes.

Betting on the horses themselves to win, place, show, and the various side bets are the most common placed wagers, but trainers are also bet on.

Because this is considered a series, many punters choose to bet on the entire event before the first Saturday in May, when the Kentucky Derby is run. Despite that bet's popularity, however, no horse has actually taken the Triple Crown for over three decades now (which has served to increase the value of the bet!).

Triple Crown Betting

Triple crown betting tends to attract a wealthier range of bettors, so there is a lot of money flying around. That, of course, means that there will be a lot of information created claiming to help people win that money.

The source you choose will be up to you, but try to do as much background on it as possible (win records, admission of imperfect systems, and so on).

What most people will be looking at when handicapping their bets are the best "angles". Angles are bits of information that can help decide the chances of a particular horse when it comes to winning the Triple Crown or any of its component races. Here are a few popular angles:

Pedigree: The ancestry of a horse will give a good indication of its ability to contend.

? Trainer: Some trainers are better than others, and many have been able to make more than one horse into a champion.

Earnings: How much the horse has won so far can show how well he runs pressure races.

Prep races: A good indication of how a horse's season is going to go.

Beyer figures: Numbers which indicate a horses speed performance, all other variables (length of the race, surface, etc) being equal.

As with any other form of sports betting, the most successful bettors in Triple crown betting are those who do their homework. This means understanding the way others are betting almost as much as the horses involved in the actual race. The Triple Crown races are a great way to pit your knowledge against some of the best in the business.

Romney woos Hispanics, says Obama has failed them

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney turned his focus to the Hispanic vote Friday as he gathered Latino business leaders to discuss the issues he talks about with every other constituency: the economy and jobs.

Romney met with nine Phoenix-area Hispanic business and community leaders and asked them for their views on immigration law, education and the economy ? underscoring the importance of the nation's fastest-growing minority group is playing in the general election, particularly in the swing-voting states that are expected to be competitive right up until Election Day.

The general election-focused Romney who came to the Arizona Historical Society Museum on a 100-degree afternoon didn't have much to say about border fences, illegal immigration or his promise to veto the so-called DREAM Act, which would allow some illegal immigrants a path to legal residency. He didn't say much about other issues that dominated the vitriolic and drawn-out Republican primary ? and that he's expounded on at length at previous round-tables, town halls and campaign events.

Former University of Arizona President Manuel Pacheco asked Romney to give a "nod" and "some signal for a glimmer of hope" to the students who could potentially gain a change in status if Congress passes legislation helping those who finish college to become citizens. Romney said only: "Thank you. Appreciate it, thank you."

Other participants appealed to Romney for basic "fairness" in the immigration system, and one mentioned a Republican alternative to the DREAM Act proposed by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla. Romney stuck to asking questions of the participants, not offering extended opening remarks or making statements after participants spoke, as he often has at previous round-table events.

Romney's refocusing comes the same week Obama has launched an advertising effort targeting Hispanics in key swing states in an attempt to keep these Democratic-leaning voters in his own fold.

Before the scheduled round-table discussion with Hispanic business leaders, Romney's campaign circulated a graphic aimed at highlighting the impact of tough economic conditions on Hispanic families.

"The Obama administration has brought hard times to Hispanics in America," the graphic says. "Under President Obama, more Hispanics have struggled to find work than at any other time on record."

Obama's campaign, meanwhile, is spending about $145,000 on broadcast advertising aimed at Hispanics this week, according to data from the media tracking firm SMG Delta. The ads are running in Florida, Colorado and Nevada ? all battleground states in the fall campaign.

Obama's campaign accused Romney of lying to Hispanics about the president's record in his push to woo Hispanics. "President Obama believes we should grow our economy and create jobs that reward hard work and responsibility, and we are seeing results," Gabriela Domenzain, Obama's director for Hispanic press, said in a statement.

Hispanic voters overwhelmingly supported Obama in the 2008 election.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, was also in Arizona to address state Republican leaders. He spoke as the presumptive nominee and his campaign worked to integrate with the Republican National Committee.

Reading from a list, Romney rattled off the names of his primary challengers and thanked them, saying they "fought hard and well." The list included Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul, who are still campaigning against him.

Sen. John McCain, the party's 2008 nominee, and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus introduced Romney to the gathering of about 200 people. Priebus told Romney that he wanted to welcome him "in a formal way, to greet a family here."

In his speech to the group, Romney criticized David Axelrod, a top Obama adviser, who on Sunday characterized the election as a choice between and economy that "produces a growing middle class and that gives people a chance to get ahead and their kids a chance to get ahead, and an economy that continues down the road we are on."

Reading the remark as casting Obama's economic record in a bad light, Romney said, "I could not agree more."

Romney also met privately with RNC members who had been loyal supporters during the primary process.

Ahead of his speech, three top Romney advisers spent two days meeting with GOP leaders. The party committee has been laying the groundwork for its voter identification programs as well as for a major outreach program to Hispanic voters as the primary process has ground on.

Romney advisers say the integration between the committee and the campaign is going relatively smoothly, as many Romney advisers have close personal ties to RNC staffers or have worked for the committee before.

When Making Improvements On Your Home You Need Certain Tools

Tools used for home improvement projects are sometimes very specific. Preparing in advance for your project is very important to your success in the long run. You shouldn?t compromise when it comes to tools. When planning, you need to be very serious about getting the proper sizes and types of tools that will be needed. If this is something that you are doing, a home improvement project, this article will help you choose the right tools that you will need.

When opting for the power tools needed for the job, most of these are available with or without cords; this would be your choice. While cordless tools are not usually as powerful as ones with cords, they have the advantage of being much more convenient to use. Cordless also offers a safer work place due to the fact that there is not a cord cluttering the workplace and creating a hazard. When you purchase cordless tools, you should consider using lithium ion batteries in place of the usual ones. By choosing lithium ion rechargeable batteries you will have the advantage of longer periods of usage over traditional rechargeable batteries; they also more reliable when the temperatures are chilly. Cordless power gear can be very efficient for your home improvement jobs; and are less likely to cause any type of injurious situations.

Safety equipment is an absolute necessity when you are getting ready to do the job. Safety glasses are important for many types of jobs, such as sawing or drilling, as otherwise chips of wood, paint or other materials could get into your eyes. If you?re going to be using loud tools you may want to get some kind of ear protection. It is important that you also use gloves on your hands so they do not get cut with razor-sharp edges or get splinters when working with wood. Anyone that wears a dust mask more than likely will be working with fiberglass insulation. When doing construction work, it is absolutely necessary to protect your cranium with a hard hat. Give proper consideration to every piece of safety equipment that you will need to get the job done properly.

For many of the home repairs you will be doing, without a ladder you will never reach them. Whether you?re painting the exterior of your house, working on the roof or repairing shingles, you don?t only need a ladder, you need one that?s solid and the proper size. When you only need to reach so high, like most indoor tasks, all you will need is a stepladder. If you need to reach higher places, you?ll need an extension ladder. Not all ladders can hold the same weight, so make sure you check the duty ratings. You need to know how much you weigh and how much you are carrying up the ladder, to know how strong the ladder needs to be. For your own safety, get a ladder that will hold you, plus anything you will be carrying up with you. Always make sure your ladder is high enough without your having to stretch for whatever you have to do.

Using simple organization skills, and the right tools, you can complete your home improvement plans without too much extra work. If you?re not sure what tools you?ll need, you should research this before you begin your project. Decisions such as whether to get manual or power tools come down to personal preferences as well as your budget. To get the best results, always get efficient tools that can help you get the job done right in the least amount of time.

Holy bat cave! See millions of bats on new tour

? Merlin D. Tuttle / Bat Conservation International

Bats emerge from the Bracken Bat Cave in New Braunfels, Texas.

By Harriet Baskas, msnbc.com contributor

The public will finally get to see a natural, nightly show that?s totally batty.

Bracken Cave, the Texas home of the world?s largest bat colony, is open for public tours for the very first time.

From April through October, millions of Mexican free-tailed bats move into the cave, which sits on 697 acres of protected land near New Braunfels, Texas. The summer gathering creates one of the largest concentrations of mammals on earth.

?We haven?t actually counted them all, but estimates are somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 million bats,? said Fran Hutchins, Bracken Bat Cave coordinator for Bat Conservation International (BCI), which owns the property.

Since 1992, only BCI members have been allowed to witness the nightly tornado of hungry bats emerging from a sinkhole at the mouth of the cave. But this summer BCI has joined up with a neighboring attraction, Natural Bridge Caverns, to offer public tours to the cave.

?It?s a spectacular sight. The bats form a vortex dense enough to show up on airport radar,? said Hutchins. ?They fly in a 60-mile radius in search of food and in one night will eat hundreds of tons of insects, which makes the farmers around here very happy.?

Tours, which last three to four hours, begin with an orientation at Natural Bridge Caverns. Visitors then form a convoy and drive down a gravel road on BCI property to the cave.

?It?s a remote site that has been kept purposefully natural,? said Travis Wuest, whose family has owned Natural Bridge Caverns for three generations. ?We tell people to bring binoculars because there?s a whole ecosystem of other animals, including falcons, hawks, raptors and owls, that come out to try and eat the bats.?

The Bracken Bat Flight tours are scheduled several times a week, through October. Reservations are required, as tours are limited to 60 people per night. Cost: $24.99 (adult or child), with a portion of the proceeds supporting conservation of the Bracken site. (Combination tickets with Natural Bridge Caverns are also available.)

Hutchins said bat fans should also be sure to visit Austin, about an hour away. ?Bracken Cave is home to the largest bat colony in the world, but Austin is home to the largest urban bat colony in the world.?

Austin?s 1.5 million bats make their summer home underneath a downtown bridge. Each night hundreds of bat-watchers gather by the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, along the river banks of Lady Bird Lake, to watch the city bats head out for their evening meal of moths, mosquitoes and pests.

Austin celebrates its bats with a free annual Bat Fest, which this year will take place on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Happiness through Cosmetic Surgery ? Beauty, Health and Fitness

Today, ads showcase various goods that make people beautiful and younger-looking, but there are still people who decide to have an altered appearance through cosmetic surgery. Those who do so differ in their reasons such as to look more distinct, bring back the people they love, or be as attractive as the celebrities they idolize. In any case, going through My Cosmetic Surgery Miami isn?t something that should be taken lightly.

Being able to pay for the procedure isn?t enough; awareness of the risky and possible fatal effects of such surgery is highly necessary as undergoing a physical change does not always equal a positive result. Altering your appearance can be a dramatic experience since your body will need to undergo surgery and in turn, be affected by this. In some rare cases, some people?s outlook remains clouded and they seemingly become obsessed with changing themselves despite some bad outcomes.

But getting cosmetic surgery in this day and age rarely goes wrong. In most cases, <a rel=?nofollow? onclick=?javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link/5826379']);? href= http://www.mycosmeticsurgerymiami.com/? target=new><b> Cosmetic Surgery Miami </b></a>is also a source of happiness and great stories. Although not all would admit it, most people would agree that looking attractive is a confidence booster that can be helpful in job hunting or searching for a future love. Some of the ?young once? feel like the young ones they see in advertisements and that makes them want to be healthier. Promoting health through cosmetic procedures can be utilized so that people would be properly motivated to change not only their looks but their lifestyle as well. They may be encouraged to have enough determination and discipline to retain their rejuvenated physical being.

With the freedom to do what pleases you comes the responsibility to have knowledge of the effects of cosmetic surgery. One should learn to rely on trusted and experienced doctors who, in turn, must do the necessary precautions when dealing with patients who desire to have their appearance changed. Finally, learning to be happy with your appearance is good, but having confidence in what Miami cosmetic surgery can offer to their lives should also be encouraged. ?
