Healthy Summer Recipe: Carrot and Date Quinoa Salad | Food ...

Check out this delicious recipe from our friends at EcoSalon:

Scrounge up some greens at the farmers? market and make a sweet but hearty summer salad.

The arrival of summer means the arrival of bags of mixed salad greens at farmers market, or of course, your own from your garden. Instead of basing salad recipes off of them though, I like to throw them in as an extra addition to whatever I am making, a complement to the rest of the dish. That?s exactly what they are in this quinoa salad recipe.

Quinoa Salad

Using both red and white quinoa, you get a colorful salad that is full of omega-3s and hearty enough that you can eat it as the main dish. The dates and currants give it a sweeter flavor, which is perfect for warmer weather and a meal outside.

Ingredients:

Summer Carrot and Date Quinoa Salad

  • 1/2 cup white quinoa
  • 1/2 cup red quinoa
  • 3 large carrots, chopped
  • 1/2 cup dates, chopped
  • 1/2 cup currants
  • mixed salad greens

Basil and Mustard Citrus Vinaigrette

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • juice of 1/2 an orange
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 2-3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh basil (depending on how much basil flavor you want)

Quinoa Salad

Directions:

Prepare the quinoa. Place in saucepan with 2 cups of water and a pinch of sea salt and bring to a boil. Cover and let simmer until water has cooked off, about 15 minutes. Set aside to cool.

In a large salad bowl combine chopped carrots, dates and currants.

To make the dressing, combine olive oil, apple cider vinegar and orange juice in a small jar or bowl. Add in mustard and whisk until well-blended. Stir in basil.

Mix in quinoa with rest of salad ingredients, and top with dressing. Toss together.

Before serving, add in a couple of handfuls of mixed salad greens.

Chrome comes to iOS with browser sync, new interface

7 hrs.

Google announced Thursday at its I/O developer conference in San Francisco that its?popular Chrome browser was coming to iOS devices. It has just gone live in Apple's App Store and we've gotten a chance to test out its capabilities.

The general look and feel will be familiar to anyone who has used the desktop version of the browser: the tabs are on top, with the URL bar below and the usual navigation buttons to either side. A menu button on the right brings up handy options not found in Safari, the iPad's default browser.

You can create Incognito tabs for anonymous browsing, switch to the desktop version of the site if you've been served a mobile one, and of course edit your settings. You can also search for?text on the page you're looking at, which is extremely useful. Touching the URL selects the whole thing, too; no need to hunt around for the little "x" to erase it before typing in a new one.

There's also an "Other Devices" option that loads up current and recent tabs on any other device you own that's signed into Chrome. As you can see in this screenshot, it is detecting both my Mac and the Chromebook I was using last week. Opening a new tab can go either to this screen, your bookmarks (also synced), or frequently visited sites.

You can open as many tabs as you want, and navigating through them is accomplished by swiping your finger from the side of the screen, which hops between tabs, showing a black-and-white preview of tabs that may have changed since you last looked. It's handy when you have more than four or five tabs open and don't know which is the one you're trying to find.?On the iPhone, the tabs are spread out like cards and you sort of shuffle through them.

Chrome isn't as full-featured as other browsers in the sharing department: the only option at the moment is to email the current page. No Facebook, Twitter, or anything else. There is also no way to install extensions like ad-blockers, interface customizations?and add-on services. A Google representative said the company has no further details to share at this time, but it's likely that making extensions available for a platform like iOS is difficult when they're designed with the desktop in mind.

Web?pages look identical to Safari, probably because they use the same engine to render them?? a restriction Apple places on browsers on iOS. And unfortunately, you can't set Chrome as your default browser?? again, Apple won't let that happen. But for day-to-day browsing, Chrome appears to be a stronger candidate than Safari, especially if you're already using it on other devices.

You can download Chrome for free from the App Store here.

India is second largest market for Omani non-oil exports

By Conrad Prabhu -
MUSCAT ? For the third consecutive year, India retained its position as the second largest destination for Omani non-exports in 2011, the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) said in its Annual Report for last year.
Non-oil exports of Omani exports soared 27.7 per cent to reach a value of RO 413.1 million in 2011, from RO 323.4 million a year earlier. India has been a growing importer of Omani non-oil goods, receiving RO 219.4 million worth of merchandise in 2009.
As a percentage of total Omani non-oil exports, India accounted for a 13.6 per cent share last year, up from 13.2 per cent in 2010 and 11.9 per cent a year earlier. Rising exports of chemical products contributed to the growth in exports to India, the apex bank said.
But dominating the league table of major destinations for Omani non-oil exports was the United Arab Emirates (UAE) which received RO 450.1 million worth of goods in 2011, representing a 14.6 per cent share of the total. Exports to the UAE fell significantly from the previous year?s high of RO 573.6 million, largely due to lower exports of mineral products.
China, in third place, imported RO 331.8 million worth of Omani non-oil goods in 2011, which was sharply up from the previous year?s figure of RO 185.2 million. The Asian economic giant, together with the UAE, India and Saudi Arabia, accounted for 47.2 per cent of total non-oil exports of Omani origin in 2011.
Interestingly, Kuwait registered a four-fold increase in exports from the Sultanate, boosted largely by inflows of chemical products. The tiny oil-rich state, which imported RO 109.million worth of Omani non-oil goods, is rapidly emerging as an important trading partner of Oman, the Central Bank said.
Fellow GCC member Saudi Arabia also retained its position as the fourth largest market for Omani goods for the last three years. Non-oil imports from the Sultanate jumped to RO 239.6 million in value last year, up from RO 182.6 million in 2010.
Significantly, markets in markets in south-east Asia and the far-east have also been rapidly opening up to Omani merchandise. ?Oman is taking major strides in diversifying its export markets in recent years. A shift in the share from traditional markets in the Middle East to new markets like Indonesia, Malaysia and Taiwan is clearly discernible,? the Central Bank noted in its Annual Report.
In Europe, exports to the Netherlands more than doubled to RO 66.6 million 2011, which augurs well for the future in terms of diversification, the CBO said.
The value of non-oil exports of Omani origin increased considerably by 23.9 per 1340806675052547900 cent to RO 3.033 billion in 2011, the apex bank said, adding that re-exports also increased by 17 per cent to RO 2,247.6 million in 2011 from RO 1,921.7 million in 2010.
Meanwhile, total merchandise exports (comprising crude oil, refined oil, liquefied natural gas, non-oil exports, and re-exports) increased by 28.7 per cent to RO 18.106 billion in 2011 from RO 14.073 billion in 2010. The surge in exports of crude oil and LNG during the year resulted mainly from higher realization of oil prices in 2011. While crude oil exports increased 33.1 per cent to RO 10.659 billion in 2011, LNG exports rose 24.9 per cent to RO 1.469 billion during the same year, according to the Annual Report.

Sprinters' coach wants quick end to 100 debate

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) ? The last thing Bobby Kersee wants to do is burden his sprinters with controversy going into qualifying for the 200 meters on Thursday.

The longtime coach is trying to keep his two athletes focused on the race at hand, not one that's possibly waiting down the road.

So Kersee hinted that an answer just might come sooner rather than later on how to resolve a third-place tie between Allyson Felix and Jeneba Tarmoh, who finished in a dead heat in the 100-meter final at last weekend's Olympic trials.

The sprinters technically have until Sunday, when the trials end, to decide if they want a runoff ? a winner-take-all race to break the tie ? or a coin flip to determine who gets the last spot on the London-bound team in the event. One of them can simply bow out, too.

"It's a unique situation and we still have plenty of time to figure it out," Kersee told The Associated Press late Tuesday night. "Anytime you have a situation like that, you have to come up with different solutions. We're all talking, the athletes are talking, USA Track and Field is talking, in terms of coming up with a solution.

"It's just so the athletes can step on the track Thursday knowing they can focus on the 200 meters, and then deal with what we have to deal with after that."

This has turned into quite a hot topic.

Justin Gatlin would pick a runoff, reluctantly. So would Maurice Greene, who would do a coin toss as a last resort.

Everybody has an opinion ? even Olympic gold medalists ? about USA Track and Field's hastily unveiled options for breaking the third-place tie.

The organization has come under scrutiny for not having a plan in place for handling a tie, like they have in swimming, gymnastics and other sports.

"I honestly can't tell you why a protocol wasn't in place," USATF President Stephanie Hightower said. "No one ever thought through it. The likelihood of it happening didn't cross anybody's minds."

Surprising, since this has happened before ? to Hightower, no less.

At the 1984 Olympic trials, she finished in a three-way tie for second place in the hurdles. A grainy photo was used to break the tie and she was the odd person out, failing to earn a spot.

"There's no question that everyone was caught off guard," Hightower said. "At least this gives us the motivation to look at our bylaws and competition rules to see if there are any other gaping holes we need to shore up before the next big championship or Olympic trials."

That doesn't exactly help Felix and Tarmoh. They will compete in the 200 meters and after Saturday's final, if both make it, decide what to do next. The trials went on a two-day break Tuesday and will resume Thursday.

So far, the women have been pretty much mum on the matter. Their teammates have not.

"As an athlete, this worries me," said Gatlin, who won the 100 at trials, but will skip the 200. "Because no one knew about this loophole in the system.

"To run the 100-meter final at the Olympic trials and for it to be decided on a coin toss? It blows my mind."

So does a runoff.

"Your coach trains you for three rounds, for six rounds if you run the 100 and 200, and not an extra round. That's looked at as more of a sideshow," Gatlin said. "These ladies should have the respect for someone to say to them, 'Hey, you know what? There should've been a better (system) in place.'"

If left to Greene, an Olympic gold medalist in 2000, he would pick the runoff. Maybe.

"That's why you have a coach," he said. "If he said (coin flip), I would have to do that."

As it is, both are eligible to be selected to the Olympic 400-meter relay team. So are Carmelita Jeter, who won the 100, and runner-up Tianna Madison.

"This (the result of the 100) will not affect relay pool at all," women's Olympic coach Amy Deem said. "We'll still turn in the same four names and two alternates."

There has been some scuttle that perhaps Felix is waiting to see how she fares in her signature event, the 200, before reaching any decision. Should she earn a spot in the 200 and Tarmoh doesn't, Felix might just surrender the 100 spot to her training partner.

"It's noble, but I'm not giving anything up," Greene said. "I fight for everything. Nothing in life is given to you. You have to take everything you want and you have to work for it."

He has a solution ? a made-for-TV special. No other events, just these two women on the track.

"Tell NBC to give them $2 million and have a runoff," Greene said. "Then they'll do it for sure. If they have a runoff, do you realize how much money there's going to be?"

Maybe that would work if they weren't already coming off a grueling competition schedule. Kersee is concerned about the possibility of injury, since there's really no rest for either athlete.

The Olympics, after all, are on the line.

"You've come this far. I would gut it out," Gatlin said. "I would run. ... It would bring more excitement to track and field, to have a runoff."

In every other sport, there's some sort of carefully spelled-out tiebreaker in place.

In swimming, deadlocks are settled with swim-offs between the two opponents.

Gymnastics released its revamped tiebreak procedures so it doesn't have a repeat of the debacle in Beijing, where it practically took a NASA physicist to decipher the complicated formula that settled the gold medal on uneven bars. Now the execution mark will be the big deciding factor, and there is the possibility of sharing medals.

Odds of that happening are rare.

Still, it's a plan.

"You're always going to have your haters and your critics," Hightower said. "That goes with the territory. I think we've been responsible, responsive and we've been thoughtful. If this is a way to educate people about our sport, I'll take good with bad."

In a society that craves everything in an instant, the 100 is the ideal race.

Sprinters blaze down the track, lean at the finish line and look up at the giant scoreboard, where the times and places instantly pop up.

Even high-tech cameras couldn't break Saturday night's dead heat in a sport that's long relied on technology. Unlike baseball, which is slowly turning to video replay, track uses images to help sort things out.

But in this case, the image from the outside camera was inconclusive for determining the finish because both runners' arms obscured their torsos ? a key consideration in determining the finish.

The image from the inside camera, shot at 3,000 frames per second, was analyzed by timers and referees, who declared the tie.

"We might even look at where we put cameras in the future," Hightower said. "Now that we've had this incident, it will give us the motivation, for us to do our due diligence to look at things.

"I want to make sure that both (Felix and Tarmoh) walk away from this knowing that there was a fair process in place and they had input into it. They can walk away and feel like we haven't done anything to harm them and their ability long term."

NerdWallet Launches Online Tool To Address Gay Couples - Queerty

?Many couples think that a Registered Domestic Partnership or state-sanctioned marriage is sufficient. It isn?t. What happens when you travel to another state? What happens when the Federal government comes asking for their estate taxes,? posits NerdWallet?s Shiyan Koh, who recommends couples hire a qualified lawyer to draft their documents rather than go the DIY route. ?It may seem expensive to pay an attorney now,? she says. ?but it will be cheaper than the cost of dealing with litigation because you didn?t have these protections in place. ?

Best of all, if you can?t find the answer you need, they?re also happy to address user submitted queries, like ?How do I find a gay-friendly attorney?? Good question!

Nonprofits announce $30 million campaign to help veterans

By Rebecca Ruiz

A group of nonprofits and charities dedicated to helping veterans announced Wednesday a campaign to raise $30 million to assist former service members.?

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, a nonprofit with 200,000 members nationwide, unveiled a Veteran Support Fund that will direct donations to itself and four other organizations. The initiative was staked by six entrepreneurs and philanthropists whose founding gifts totaled $1.1 million.

The partner organizations are Operation Mend, which gives medical support to critically injured veterans; Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, which provides coping and trauma resources to survivors of deceased service members; Operation Homefront, which offers emergency financial aid to wounded warriors and families of service members; and the National Military Family Association, which advocates for benefits and programs to support military families.

?

"Supporting veterans isn?t charity, it?s an absolute necessity and an investment in our country?s future," Paul Rieckhoff, executive director of IAVA, said in a statement. "After ten years of war, our nation?s military families are strained, nonprofit services are maxed out and our veterans? community is severely under-resourced."

Jim Knotts, president and CEO of Operation Homefront, told msnbc.com that the increased funding will help the organization provide emergency assistance, like food, transitional housing and money for car repairs, to more families. Last year, Operation Homefront met more than 5,000 emergency requests and provided transitional housing for 80 families.

Knotts said that while the organization's fundraising has been strong in recent years, he is concerned that donations will dwindle as service members return from Afghanistan.

"A lot of people are thinking that we?re out of Iraq and we?ll be out of Afghanistan so our need to support the military will end soon," he said. "But it will be a 50-year campaign to support this generation of wounded warriors ... Even military families who remain will have ongoing needs as a result of 10 years worth of war."

IAVA said the initiative will be a "centralized platform where Americans can support and donate to a consortium of effective and trusted best-in-class veterans? organizations."

Charity Navigator, which evaluates select charities and nonprofits, has awarded three- and four-star ratings to Operation Homefront, National Military Family Association and Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors.

Sandra Miniutti, vice president of marketing and chief financial officer for Charity Navigator, said that donating to a veterans organization or charity can be an emotional decision.

"Supporting our troops, their families and the veterans are issues that tug at everyone?s heart strings," Miniutti told msnbc.com. "Oftentimes, donors give to these types of charities solely with their heart. They fail to stop and use their head too and vet the charities to ensure that they are financially healthy, accountable and transparent and produce real results."

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, led by Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., considers whether to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, on Capitol Hill in Washington, Wednesday, June 20, 2012. In a showdown with President Barack Obama?s administration, House Republicans are pressing for more Justice Department documents on the flawed gun-smuggling probe known as Operation Fast and Furious that resulted in hundreds of guns illicitly purchased in Arizona gun shops winding up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? Obama administration officials and House Republican staff members Tuesday failed to resolve a document dispute that could lead to a precedent-setting contempt of Congress vote Thursday against Attorney General Eric Holder.

A House Republican official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name, said White House and Justice Department representatives met and showed the GOP staff less than 30 pages of documents related to the aftermath of the botched gun-tracking operation known as Fast and Furious.

The GOP official said the administration also promised to provide hundreds of pages of documents, but only if House Republicans would stop the contempt effort and end their investigation. A House committee currently is looking into administration actions taken after the Justice Department provided inaccurate information to Congress on the gun-tracking operation.

The Justice Department has said the offer of more documents ? originally made last week ? was not an effort to shut down the investigation but rather an offer to resolve the outstanding subpoena issues and thereby avoid contempt.

The GOP official said the latest document offer was rejected and no further meetings were scheduled.

"The documents that were shown today did not shed any meaningful new light on the questions and interactions that took place at the Justice Department" after whistle-blowers told Congress that Fast and Furious allowed guns bought in Arizona to "walk" into Mexico, the GOP official said.

Those attending the meeting included White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, legislative director Rob Nabors, Justice Department official Steven Reich and representatives of House Speaker John Boehner and Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif.

President Barack Obama has asserted a broad version of executive privilege to keep Justice Department documents secret. The GOP official said the House staff members asked for a log of documents that would be withheld, but the administration officials refused.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz said, "This was a good faith effort to resolve this while still protecting the institutional prerogatives of the executive branch, often championed by these same Republicans criticizing us right now. Unfortunately, Republicans have opted for political theater rather than conduct legitimate congressional oversight."

A senior administration official, who was not authorized to be quoted on details of the meeting, said the administration showed the Republicans a representative sample of the documents so they could see firsthand the types of communications in dispute. The official said the administration offered unprecedented access to documents showing how the Justice Department responded to the GOP inquiry.

Now that the politically potent National Rifle Association is keeping score, some Democrats are expected to join House Republicans in supporting the contempt of Congress vote against Holder.

One of those Democrats, Rep. Jim Matheson of Utah, said, "Sadly, it seems that it will take holding the attorney general in contempt to communicate that evasiveness is unacceptable. It is a vote I will support."

The gun owners association injected itself last week into the stalemate over Justice Department documents demanded by the House Oversight Committee. The NRA said it supports the contempt resolution and will keep a record of how members vote.

An NRA letter to House members contended that the Obama administration "actively sought information" from Operation Fast and Furious to support its program to require dealers to report multiple rifle sales.

The program, which began last August, imposed the requirement for sales of specifically identified long guns in four border states: Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico. A federal judge upheld the requirement.

Republicans want Holder to become the first attorney general to be cited by the House for contempt because he has refused to give the Oversight Committee all the documents it wants related to Operation Fast and Furious.

Unless a last-minute deal is worked out, always a possibility in Congress, the contempt vote Thursday would be the same day the Supreme Court is to announce its ruling on the legality of the nation's health care law.

A vote to hold Holder in contempt of Congress wouldn't send any documents to the Oversight Committee.

Obama invoked what is known as "deliberative process privilege," a claim designed to broadly cover executive branch documents. However Issa, in a letter to the president, said Obama was misusing the narrower "presidential communications privilege," which is reserved for documents to and from the president and his most senior advisers.

White House Spokesman Eric Schultz said Tuesday that Issa's analysis "has as much merit as his absurd contention that Operation Fast and Furious was created in order to promote gun control. Our position is consistent with executive branch legal precedent for the past three decades spanning administrations of both parties."

Ironically, the documents at the heart of the current argument are not directly related to the workings of Operation Fast and Furious, which allowed guns to "walk" from Arizona to Mexico in hopes they could be tracked. The department has given Issa 7,600 documents on the operation.

Rather, Issa wants internal communications from February 2011, when the administration denied knowledge of gun-walking, to the end of that year, when officials acknowledged the denial was erroneous. Those documents covered a period after Fast and Furious had been shut down.

In Fast and Furious, agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Arizona abandoned the agency's usual practice of intercepting all weapons they believed to be illicitly purchased. Instead, the goal of gun-walking was to track such weapons to high-level arms traffickers who long had eluded prosecution and to dismantle their networks.

Gun-walking long has been barred by Justice Department policy, but federal agents in Arizona experimented with it in at least two investigations during the George W. Bush administration before Fast and Furious.

The agents in Arizona lost track of several hundred weapons in Operation Fast and Furious. The low point of the operation came in Arizona in 2010, when U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was killed in a firefight with a group of armed Mexican bandits and two guns traced to the operation were found at the scene.

Microsoft pays $1.2b for business social network Yammer

Steve Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft, speaks at the Seoul Digital Forum 2012.

Microsoft is buying internet start-up Yammer for $US1.2 billion in an attempt to bring Facebook-like sharing features to its widely used suite of business software applications.

Yammer specialises in creating private social networks so employees within the same company can keep tabs on what colleagues are working on. That's similar to how Facebook's online social network allows friends and families to track what's happening in each other's personal lives.

The deal with the microblogging site, announced Monday, comes nearly two weeks after word of Microsoft's negotiations with Yammer first leaked out in published reports.

Advertisement: Story continues below

The acquisition represents Microsoft's latest attempt to adapt to a major shift in the technology industry, one that is fueling demand for more Internet-connected services and social-networking tools.

The upheaval is threatening to marginalise Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, and ultimately diminish the amount of money coming in from sales of its Windows operating system and a wide range of applications designed primarily for personal computers.

As part of its effort to remain relevant, Microsoft paid $US8.5 billion last year for internet chat service Skype in the largest acquisition in its history.

In another bold move, Microsoft last week unveiled its own tablet computer, Surface, to compete with Apple's iPad. Microsoft has designed Surface to run on the upcoming Windows 8, the biggest change to the company's operating system in nearly two decades.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is counting on Yammer's sharing tools to ensure that long-established Microsoft applications, including its word processing and spreadsheet programs, remain vital components for getting work done. Google has emerged as a threat with a toolbox of similar programs that run primarily over the internet rather than on individual machines.

"Think of Yammer as a fundamental part of our Office family," Ballmer said on a Monday conference call.

Microsoft will have much of the same autonomy given to Skype since that deal closed eight months ago. Yammer will continue to be run from its San Francisco headquarters by its co-founder and CEO, David Sacks. It will also continue to provide its services separately from Microsoft's offerings.

David Sacks told IT Pro in April, he was hoping to double the company's user base. It already counts a number of large corproates as clients, including Deloitte. It competes directly with Salesforce.com's Chatter microblogging product.

"We believe that every company will have its own internal social network for its employees to collaborate and share."
He said some customers have reported their email volume has been reduced by 30 to 40 per cent," Sacks said at the time.

Microsoft did not give a time frame for when the deal should close.

The Yammer acquisition isn't Microsoft's first attempt at a social plug-in for Office products. Two years ago it took third-party contact start-up Xobni under its wing in its BizSpark accelerator program, but did not purchase the company. Outlook 2010 was launched with a similar feature, Social Connectors, that pulled contacs' social networking feeds to the email program.

Gartner analyst Larry Cannell said Microsoft's latest acquisition was smart and reflected "a recognition that the social capabilities in Microsoft's products have been deficient".

Investors couldn't muster much enthusiasm for the deal on another somber day for the stock market. Microsoft's stock fell 82 cents, or nearly 3 per cent, to close at $US29.88.

Although other companies such as Jive Software and Salesforce.com are building social networks for businesses, Yammer's model is closer to Facebook's.

When it started in 2008, Yammer raised its initial funding from Peter Thiel - Facebook's first major investor. Thiel formerly worked with Sacks while they were both executives at PayPal, an online payment service that eBay bought for $US1.5 billion in 2002.

Sean Parker, the former Facebook president depicted by Justin Timberlake in the 2010 movie The Social Network, also sits on Yammer's board of directors. Parker still owns a 4.6 per cent stake in Facebook currently worth about $US2.2 billion.

Microsoft has its own financial ties to Facebook, having invested $US240 million in the social network in 2007. After selling $US250 million in stock in Facebook's initial public offering last month, Microsoft still retains a 1.7 per cent stake worth about $US840 million.

Yammer has relied largely on word of mouth to attract more than 5 million registered users at more than 200,000 companies worldwide.

The service depends on employees to use its free tools to set up a private network within their company. Once the network is getting wide usage, Yammer then tries to sell more sophisticated features to the companies.

As a privately held company, Yammer hasn't disclosed its revenue. In a Monday note about the Microsoft deal, Nomura Securites analyst Rick Sherlund estimated Yammer's revenue at $US15 million to $US20 million last year.

The company has been expanding so rapidly that it had been considered a prime candidate to pursue an IPO by next year.

The stock of Yammer rival Jive Software has gained 65 per cent since it went public six months ago, though it fell 74 cents Monday to close at $US19.75.

The IPO market has gone into a deep freeze since Facebook flopped in its closely watching stock market debut last month. Instead of soaring as had been widely anticipated, Facebook shares plummeted during the first few weeks of trading. Although the stock has rallied recently, it remains 16 per cent below the IPO price of $US38, which had minted Facebook with a market value of $US104 billion. Facebook shares dropped 99 cents, or 3 percent, Monday to close at $US32.06.

Sacks said the frosty conditions in the IPO market didn't influence Yammer's decision to sell to Microsoft. The negotiations between the two companies began before Facebook's IPO, according to Sacks and Ballmer.

"Our thinking was based on the fit with Microsoft and the fact that we think Microsoft is a great partner for us in expanding the service and taking it to the next level," Sacks said.

The sale will provide a hefty return for Yammer's early backers. The start-up has raised about $US142 million in venture capital.

Select Books: Books on Childhood Education and Early Learning

Here are five titles on childhood education, early learning and how to nurture healthy, happy children.

Too Much, Too Soon? Early Learning and the Erosion of Childhood edited by Richard House. How to nurture young children's well-being and learning to reverse the erosion of childhood? In twenty-three hard-hitting chapters, leading educators, researchers, policy makers and parents advocate alternative ways ahead for slowing childhood, better policy-making and, above all, the 'right learning at the right time' in children's growth - learning when they are developmentally ready. The Genius of Natural Childhood: Secrets of Thriving Children by Sally Goddard Blythe. 55% of parents admit they never read to their child. Toddlers watch 4.5 hours of TV daily. So Sally Goddard Blythe draws on neuroscience to unpack the wisdom of nursery rhymes, playing traditional games and fairy stories for healthy child development. Young children love creative play, stories, nursery rhymes and games. These are not only good fun, but are also good for the brain. Sally explains why movement matters and how games develop children's skills at different stages of development. She offers a starter kit of stories, action games, songs and rhymes. You are your Child's First Teacher by Rahima Baldwin Dancy. This book is about what parents can do with and for their children from birth to age six. Rahima Dancy warns against rushing children through childhood. She advocates a "slow parenting" revolution which will allow children to develop at their own pace, and crucially, will help parents discover confidence in their own ability to parent and enjoy the magical first five years of raising a child. This book will help parents to understand their child's unique personal, mental, soul and physical needs at each stage of development; nourish their child's imagination with simple, home-made toys and materials; enjoy storytelling, arts, crafts, and musical activities with their child; create their own family rituals to ease the daily routine; and value their own ability to understand and care for their child. With bibliography and index. What Babies and Children Really Need by Sally Goddard Blythe. This book examines the crucial early years from a child's perspective. It sets out the cornerstones which underpin the making of healthy, happy children, including how good pre-conceptual and pre-natal care prepares the ground for healthy child development; how events during birth can affect later educational achievement; why mother, movement and music are the 3 Ms of pre-school education; the importance of "rough and tumble" play for emotional and social development; and the special and essential roles of mothers and fathers. With bibliography and index. The Well Balanced Child: Movement and Early Learning by Sally Goddard Blythe. The Well Balanced Child is a passionate manifesto for a "whole body" approach to learning which integrates the brain, sense, movement and play. This fully revised edition includes a new chapter on what parents can do to help children reach their full potential, physically and mentally. This practical, inspirational resource will help parents and educators to understand why movement matters; how music helps brain development; the role of nutrition in brain and child growth; and how to help children with learning and behavioural problems. With index.

'Game Of Thrones' Replaces George W. Bush Look-Alike

Severed head resembling former president, once seen skewered on the walls of King's Landing, has been digitally replaced on HBO series.
By Josh Wigler

George W. Bush's likeness on a severed head in "Game of Thrones"
Photo:

Former President George W. Bush has lost his headagain.

"Game of Thrones" made headlines earlier this month when it was revealed that one of the heads lining the walls of King's Landing in the season one finale resembled the former U.S. commander-in-chief. HBO responded by immediately issuing an apology, pulling the episode from their streaming and online services, and even halting home-video shipments of the season.

Now, the episode is back online, and Bush's head has been erased, the Washington Post reports. In his stead is a generic, weak-chinned Westerosi, with a sad frown that pretty much epitomizes the unexpectedly dramatic situation.

George W. Bush's Head and Other 'Game of Thrones' Controversies

When word first hit about the likeness of Bush's severed head appearing on "Thrones," HBO officials were quick to release an apologetic statement: "We were deeply dismayed to see this and find it unacceptable, disrespectful and in very bad taste ... we made this clear to the executive producers of the series who apologized immediately for this inadvertent careless mistake. We are sorry this happened and will have it removed from any future DVD production."

For their part, executive producers and co-showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss — who first pointed out the resemblance to Bush in a DVD commentary track, which was then picked up and widely reported by an eagle-eyed Reddit user — followed suit with an apology of their own.

"We use a lot of prosthetic body parts on the show: heads, arms, etc. We can't afford to have these all made from scratch, especially in scenes where we need a lot of them, so we rent them in bulk," the pair said in a joint statement. "After the scene was already shot, someone pointed out that one of the heads looked like George W. Bush."

Well, no one can say the head looks like Bush now, can they? Then again, from the right angle, in the right light ...

Sound off about the "Game of Thrones" Bush controversy in the comments below!

Greece faces more woes: Finance minister resigns

(AP Photo/Kostas Tsironis, file)

(AP) ? The banker who was chosen to be Greece's next finance minister resigned for health reasons Monday three days after he was rushed to the hospital, while the country's prime minister was confined to his home, recovering from serious eye surgery.

Greece's debt woes took a backseat to the health problems of the country's five-day-old government, forcing debt inspectors to postpone a visit to Athens and prompting Germany to warn Monday that a European Union summit later this week would be unlikely to produce any major decisions on Greece.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras accepted the resignation of Vassilis Rapanos hours after being discharged from another hospital himself following an operation to repair a detached retina over the weekend.

Rapanos, chairman of the National Bank of Greece, had been named finance minister last week in the country's new three-party coalition government but became ill Friday before he could be sworn in. The Hygeia Hospital said his condition was improving and he was expected to be discharged Tuesday, but it did not elaborate on what he was suffering from.

"The recent incident that led to my admission to a hospital shows that my health problem has not been fully overcome," Rapanos said in his letter of resignation, released by Samaras' office. Talks with his doctors led him to determine that "my health situation, for the time being, is not such that would allow me to fully and efficiently exercise my duties."

It was unclear when a replacement would be named. As he had not been sworn in, outgoing Finance Minister Giorgos Zanias, a key negotiator for Greece's international bailout before assuming the post in a one-month caretaker government, still holds the title.

Samaras himself will have to remain at home for several days and will be unable to travel to the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday, although he can have meetings, doctors said. He spoke by telephone Monday evening with President Barack Obama.

The EU summit comes just a week after Greece's new coalition government was formed, following months of political turmoil and two inconclusive elections. It was to have been a key test of Athens' hopes of renegotiating some of the austerity measures it has agreed to in return for billions of euros in rescue loans from the International Monetary Fund and other nations in the 17-country euro currency union.

But before this week's summit, international debt inspectors known as the troika ? representatives from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the IMF ? had been due to visit Athens to review Greece's financial situation. They postponed the trip due to Samaras' and Rapanos' hospitalization.

Without the troika report on Greece's progress on the economic reforms demanded by creditors, Germany said it would be premature to expect any new decisions.

"The troika needs to go to Athens, they need to assess the status of the program, then they need to brief the eurozone and IMF leadership," said Steffen Seibert, spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "On the basis of this assessment, one can talk about necessary updating of the program ? that is the road map that everyone in Europe is following and that's why we don't expect any sort of a resolution on Greece at the EU council."

The Athens Stock Exchange general price index closed 6.84 percent down Monday after the German statement.

Greece will still go to the EU summit, sending Zanias with a delegation led by the country's president, 83-year-old Karolos Papoulias, the government announced Monday. While the Greek presidency is largely a ceremonial post, Papoulias' presence adheres to EU regulations about summits.

European Commission spokesman Amadeu Altafaj Tardio said debt inspectors will head to Greece "as soon as possible."

After years of profligate government spending and false accounting, Greece has been dependent on two rescue loan deals worth a total of ?240 billion ($300 billion) since May 2010. Its inability to resolve its debt woes have led to questions about the financial health of the entire eurozone.

Samaras' government, comprised of his New Democracy conservatives, their long-time socialist rivals PASOK and the small Democratic Left party, has said it wants to revise some of Greece's bailout conditions with creditors. That includes repealing certain tax hikes, freezing public sector layoffs and extending by two years the mid-2014 deadline for tough austerity measures that have sent Greek living standards plunging.

But Germany, the largest single contributor to the bailouts, has repeatedly said Athens must stick to its pledges.

"One thing is clear," German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said. "We cannot allow everything to be negotiated again. We can also not allow discounts to be granted. What has been decided upon stands."

Seibert also stressed that Greece must stick to its commitments.

"A program has been agreed upon, a program goes for every government, no matter if it's a new government, and the program is the best way to see Greece return to economic health," he said.

The latest figures released by the finance ministry Monday showed Greece's budget deficit for the first five months of 2012 was better than expected, coming in at ?10.87 billion ($13.63 billion) instead of the target of ?12.89 billion ($16.17 billion) on a modified cash basis.

Revenue, however, was below target with the state budget net revenue at ?19.67 billion ($24.56 billion), short of the target of ?20.6 billion ($25.73 billion). It said that was due in part to lower domestic consumer demand and lower tax revenues.

The ministry said the revenue shortfall was "more than compensated" by the budget savings for the first five months of 2012.

Naked In The File Name Of Your Image? Google Images May Block It

A Google Webmaster Help thread has one webmaster who is upset that many, about 4,000, of his images are being blocked by Google's Image Search SafeSearch filter.

Gary Illyes from Google explained that although the images might not look visually offensive but the filenames and words on the page can also flag the image as offensive. He said, do a site command and add the word [naked] to the query and that shows that many of those images are returned for a type of nude keyword phrase.

Google Images SafeSearch Filter File names

The easy fix is to rename the filenames of the images to safe words and to remove any unsafe words from the context of the page.

Gary explained in the thread:

The SafeSearch algorithms look at a variety of signals to decide what's potentially unsafe, and one of them is the filenames of the images. If the filenames contain words that may be offensive, generally the image is also potentially offensive. The same applies to the textual content of your HTML pages.

I realize identifying the images and/or the pages that may be filtered can be a challenging task; what I usually do is to turn off SafeSearch and do searches for [site:YOURSITE.com naked] and similar keywords to find them. The results that show up are typically related to the searched keyword.

To fix the issue, you will want to remove the potentially offensive words from the image filenames and the text of the landing pages.

How would you change the GoPro Hero HD 2?

How would you change

You can strap the GoPro HD Hero 2 to any number of things to document your extreme adventures in high definition. However, for all of the improvements in the second version, we found it to be distractingly heavy, difficult to mount and with audio that left plenty to the imagination. Still, a few days of testing, even with some aerial combat thrown in, can't match constant use over the last six months. So, why not tell us how you've found using this thing on a daily basis and if you could, what would you change about it?
