The Wheelharp delivers string-orchestra sounds via a mechanical keyboard

dnp The Wheelharp delivers stringorchestra sounds via a mechanical keyboard, up for funding on Kickstarter

Currently up for $50,000 in funding on Kickstarter, the Wheelharp delivers the sounds of a chamber string orchestra via a keyboard and a full chromatic set of real strings. Oh, and it's pretty much the most striking instrument we've ever seen. Developed by Los Angeles-based Antiquity Music, the device reacts to a user's press of the keys by moving a corresponding string to a rotating wheel with an edge that bows the string. The instrument gives the player plenty of controls; the right pedal controls wheel speed, while the left mans the strings' damper system.

Though an early version was demoed at NAMM this year, the Wheelharp is currently in R&D mode, and Antiquity plans to put much of the Kickstarter money toward researching the optimal string selection. Hit up the source link to hear the instrument in action. Just don't get too excited; the instrument will retail for a cool $12,500 -- or a slightly more palatable $10,000 through the crowdfunding site.

Baghdad bombs kill 25 in Sunni-Shi'te bloodletting

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A series of bombs battered Shi'ite and Sunni Muslim neighborhoods across Baghdad on Thursday, killing at least 25 people in the worst wave of sectarian violence since civil war five years ago. The bloodletting reflects increasing conflict between Iraq's majority Shi'ite leadership and the Sunni minority, many of whom feel unfairly marginalized since the 2003 fall of strongman Saddam Hussein, a Sunni.

Threatening letter sent to Obama, U.S. Secret Service says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Authorities intercepted a threatening letter addressed to President Barack Obama that was similar to ones sent to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the Secret Service said on Thursday. Letters sent to Bloomberg and his gun control group contained material believed to be the deadly poison ricin and contained a reference to gun control, New York police said on Wednesday.

Germans irked as Hollande says EU cannot dictate French reforms

PARIS/BERLIN (Reuters) - President Francois Hollande pledged on Thursday to carry out long overdue reforms of France's pension system and labor markets but said it was up to Paris, not the European Commission, to determine how they are implemented. At a joint news conference with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Hollande defended his comment that the EU executive cannot "dictate" reforms to member states - a defiant, nationalist tone that angered Germany's ruling conservatives.

Besieged Syria rebels seek help, Assad eyes missiles

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian rebels under siege near the Lebanese border pleaded for help on Thursday against government troops and their Hezbollah allies as a confident President Bashar al-Assad spoke of having new Russian missiles. Though Moscow contradicted suggestions he had taken delivery of an entire, long-range S-300 anti-aircraft system which alarms Israel, Russia's plan to send them highlighted the international confrontation brewing over Syria, even as Moscow and Washington work together for a peace conference between the warring sides.

U.N. concerned about North Korean defectors in China

GENEVA (Reuters) - A United Nations human rights investigator and the U.N. refugee agency voiced concern on Thursday about the fate of nine North Korean defectors, some of them children, who were sent back to China this week from Laos after trying to cross the border. Chinese authorities are obliged under international law not to return them to North Korea, where they could face persecution and possibly death, Marzuki Darusman, U.N. special rapporteur on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said.

Nigeria arrests Lebanese suspected of Hezbollah ties

KANO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Nigerian authorities said on Thursday they had arrested three Lebanese in northern Nigeria on suspicion of being members of Hezbollah and that a raid on one of their residences had revealed a stash of heavy weapons. The three suspects were arrested between May 16 and May 28 in the north's biggest city Kano, the city's military spokesman Captain Ikedichi Iweha said in a statement. All had admitted to being members of Hezbollah under questioning.

Egyptian draft law dashes hopes of free civil society: activists

CAIRO (Reuters) - A law drafted by the Egyptian presidency for regulating non-governmental organizations dashes hopes for a free civil society after the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak, Human Rights Watch said on Thursday. President Mohamed Mursi has said the bill submitted to the Muslim Brotherhood-led parliament on Wednesday would liberate a civil society that was stifled by Mubarak, who was toppled by an uprising ignited by democracy activists.

War crimes court acquits two ex-Serbian security officials

THE HAGUE (Reuters) - International judges on Thursday acquitted two former Serbian secret police officials of involvement in war crimes committed in Bosnia and Croatia, in a ruling welcomed by Serbia but received with disbelief by victims of wartime atrocities. The acquittal means no Belgrade government official has been convicted of crimes committed during the war in Bosnia, which claimed more than 100,000 lives over three years to 1995.

Italy's ruling party divided over order for F-35 combat jets

ROME (Reuters) - Italian opposition parties and some lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Party called on the government on Thursday to abandon its plans to buy 90 Lockheed Martin F-35 fighter jets. Italy's total planned investment in the new Lightning II Joint Strike fighters (JSF) exceeds 10 billion euros ($12.97 billion) even though it cut its order last year to 90 aircraft from the 131 it had originally penciled in to buy more than a decade ago, a move it said would save 5 billion euros.

Tribes clash over Darfur gum arabic land, 64 killed

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Clashes between tribes in Sudan's Darfur region over land producing the gum arabic stabilizer used in soft drinks have killed more than 60 people and displaced 6,500 other, police and the United Nations said. The fluid gum cut from the acacia trees that have grown on the land for years is one of Sudan's most important agricultural export products but part of the output is being smuggled over the border into Chad, where it is sold for hard currency.

FM: Assad will remain Syria's president until 2014

BEIRUT (AP) ? Syria's foreign minister says Bashar Assad will remain Syria's president at least until scheduled elections in 2014 and may run for another term.

Walid al-Moallem also said in a TV interview Wednesday that any deal reached at possible peace talks with Syria's opposition would have to be put to a referendum, raising a new condition.

Syria's main opposition group has demanded that Assad's departure from power top the agenda of any talks, tentatively to be launched at an international conference in Geneva next month.

Al-Moallem's comments to the Lebanese station Al-Mayadeen highlighted the gaps between the sides.

Netflix Stock Slides on Mixed Reviews for 'Arrested Development'

Mixed reviews for Netflix's revival of "Arrested Development" spelled trouble on Wall Street as shares of the streaming giant were down more than 6.3 percent when markets closed on Tuesday.

The company's stock rebounded slightly in pre-market trading, but by then the damage had been done. The company lost more than $14 a share throughout Tuesday, ending the day at $214.19.

Netflix has taken a risky and expensive gamble that original programming like "Arrested Development" and the Kevin Spacey political thriller "House of Cards" can help it differentiate itself from other streaming services like Hulu and Amazon and will make it the HBO of the internet.

Also read: 'Arrested Development': What Critics Think of the Bluths on Netflix

That bet seemed to pay off with "House of Cards," which earned solid notices for Spacey's performance and for its depiction of Beltway power players. The company credited buzz surrounding the show with helping it add 3 million new members during its most recent fiscal quarter and its stock surged accordingly.

It was perhaps inevitable that "Arrested Development," a cult TV favorite that was canceled 7 years ago, would disappoint in its modern reincarnation. Reviews weren't savage exactly, but most critics complained that the magic had dissipated with the years and griped that scheduling conflicts meant that many members of the sprawling cast were not able to shoot scenes together.

"I hurts me to write this," TV Guide's Sadie Gennis wrote. "It honestly does. I wanted to love Season 4 as much as I loved the first three, but I'd be lying to myself (and to you) if I ignored its weaknesses. I fell in love with Arrested Development for its density, intricacy and the dysfunctional Bluth family as a whole. But unfortunately, these aspects were absent for the first half of Season 4, exposing the fact that maybe these characters aren't as likable as we want them to be."

The New York Times' Mike Hale echoed these grievances, writing, "it's hard to imagine being anything but disappointed with this new rendition."

Of course, pleasing critics isn't everything. Viewers snapped up the 15 episodes of the new series, which in true Netflix fashion were released all at once, at a furious pace. The number of members watching the show doubled the audience that "House of Cards" attracted when it launched in February, according to a report by the internet research company Procera.

Netflix is keeping the viewing numbers close to its chest, but if its stock doesn't rebound, perhaps will be induced to pull back the veil and do a little boasting.

Facebook Airplane Ad With Eminem - Business Insider

Eminem's music publisher is suing Facebook for allegedly ripping off one of the rapper's songs in the tech giant's inaugural ad for Facebook Home, the Android takeover app.

The lawsuit claims that ad agency Wieden + Kennedy replicated Eminem's "Under the Influence" in an effort to "curry favor with Facebook by catering to Zuckerberg?s personal likes and interests, and/or to invoke the same irreverent theme."

But Facebook has made it virtually impossible for the public to tell if the ad uses Eminem's tracks. Although CEO Mark Zuckerberg played the original spot ? titled "Airplane" ? with the allegedly ripped off music during his Facebook Home launch speech, the version that was uploaded on YouTube later uses a noticeably different soundtrack.

A representative for Facebook declined comment.

Eminem's lawyer noted, "The alteration of the Airplane advertisement was an admission that Facebook knew it had infringed on the Eminem/D12 Composition."

We pulled the original version of the commercial from the keynote to let readers decide for themselves if it sounds like Facebook stole Eminem's song.

Here's the original, disputed ad for Facebook Home:

?

And here is Eminem singing "Under the Influence." We had to post a live performance since Eminem's publisher copyrighted the song so that no recorded versions can play off of YouTube. Here's a recorded version with better sound quality.

And here's the Facebook Home ad that was released on YouTube with an altered soundtrack:

Archdiocese Pays for Health Plan That Covers Birth Control | Later On

It looks as though the Catholic church simply doesn?t like Obama and are using the contraception provisions of Obamacare to attack him, when the Church has been paying for contraception for years. Sharon Otterman writes in the NY Times:

As the nation?s leading Roman Catholic bishop, Cardinal?Timothy M. Dolan?of New York has been spearheading the fight against a provision of the new?health care law?that requires employers, including some that are religiously affiliated, to cover?birth control?in employee health plans.

But even as?Cardinal Dolan insists?that requiring some religiously affiliated employers to pay for?contraception?services would be an unprecedented, and intolerable, government intrusion on religious liberty, the archdiocese he heads has quietly been paying for such coverage, albeit reluctantly and indirectly, for thousands of its unionized employees for over a decade.

The Archdiocese of New York?has previously acknowledged?that some local Catholic institutions offer health insurance plans that include contraceptive drugs to comply with state law; now, it is also acknowledging that the archdiocese?s own money is used to pay for a union health plan that covers contraception and even abortion?for workers at its affiliated?nursing homes?and clinics.

?We provide the services under protest,? said Joseph Zwilling, a spokesman for the Archdiocese of New York.

As president of the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Dolan has consistently rejected similar arm?s-length compromises offered by the Obama administration, which has agreed to exempt many religious institutions from the provision, but not religiously affiliated employers like schools and hospitals that employ people of many faiths and do not exist primarily to inculcate religious values.

In February, the bishops opposed a proposal that would have allowed employees of those nonexempt religious institutions to receive contraceptive coverage through policies paid for directly by insurance companies. The New York Archdiocese is also suing the federal government to stop the mandate.

?There remains the possibility that ministries may yet be forced to fund and facilitate such morally illicit activities,? Cardinal Dolan said at the time. . .

Continue reading. I truly detest how the Catholic church has always tried to force non-believers to follow the same church teachings that believers obey. It?s arrogant beyond belief. Especially since the Catholic church does not itself follow its teachings, unless the rape of children is considered good form. (I realize that the pedophiles were outliers?but those who protected and enabled the pedophiles were not: they were following Church beliefs and policies.)

The Catholic church is not an organization that should be involved in making decisions for others. Their track record is abysmal.

Left Archive: National College of Art A Case History of Education ...

Many thanks to the person who donated this to the Archive.

This document was published by the Student Union of the National College of Art in Dublin (later the NCAD), and written by Paddy Gillan. The dedication is suggestive of its political provenance:

To Cathal Goulding, house-painter, who spoke at a student seminar in November 1970; trusting that he and his fellow tradesmen will find it of value to apprentices.

As the acknowledgements explain, the ?pamphlet is, primarily, the result of a seminar ? ?Art and Society? which was held in the NCA in November, 1970?. It notes that ?The theoretical guidance of speakers at the seminar ? in particular, Jack Dowling, Lelia Doolan, Seamus O Tuathail and Eoghan Harris ? helped enormously in my attempt to analyse the NCA situation?

And continues:

?For advice and help in writing this pamphlet, I am indebted to Nell McCafferty, Anne Harris and John Armstrong?.

It is broken up into five chapters or sections and attempts to give an overview of the NCA and its then situation. At that time the College was situated as part of the Leinster House complex between ?D?il ?ireann and the National Library in what were once the stables of Leinster House?. The Overview notes that at the time 120 students were in attendance in the institution, ?eighteen class-rooms existed in the College, many of which are closed, necessary equipment is scarce. Rules and regulations governing the use of such equipment as exists result in it lying idle more often than it is in use. Maintenance of the NCA is in the hands of the Board of Works. The building is patrolled each night by a military picquet; the attitudes to academic discipline reflect this?.

The Background suggests that from its inception to the 1920s:

The school [Metropolitan School of Art - as was] was a colonialist institution. The work conducted in [it] was a mixture of Graeco-Roman and English art-decorative traditions. This was actualised in the form of individual art-objects ? drawings, paintings, sculptures ? and multiple craft objects which were for private consumption. The actualisation took place in a British colony, the people were politically, economically, culturally and educationally oppressed. The staff and students of the school were, essentially, privileged and their function was to serve the cultural needs of the beneficiaries of colonialism in Ireland ? the British, Anglo-Irish and upper-middle class sections of the community. As it served an elite minority, the school was neither a proper cultural or educational establishment because proper culture and education must serve and relate to the whole of a community; furthermore, it was almost totally isolated from the community. Elitism and isolation continue to affect the NCA.

There is much more, not least an interesting insight into the history of the NCA Students Union, formerly the NCA Students Representative Council, which is criticised for having formerly:

..concentrated purely on social affairs. Apart from meeting at social functions, NCA students were effectively disunited and disorganised within the College? student general meetings were rarely held; when they were, it was to discuss the Annual Art Ball.

But the account of developments in the 1967 to 1971 period gives ? perhaps ? an echo of events occurring further afield, not least in the form of student boycotting of classes due to conditions in the NCA in relation to lack of staff and resources culminating in a ?work-in? in February 1969 (there?s an entertaining reference to Brian Lenihan, then Minister of Education, being forced ?to leave a meeting at TCD through a toilet window after repeatedly refusing to state why he had closed the NCA [on foot of student actions]?. In April there was an occupation of the NCA and the following year there was another occupation and by January 1971 NCA students were picketing the Department of Education on a daily basis and further occupations ensued.
The final section, Beyond History addresses further the issue of neo-colonialism and the position of the NCA within that context.
The pamphlet also gives a sense of the times and the attitude to cultural areas within the state. There?s one telling quote from Terry Kelleher in Hibernia from 1970:

The crux of the matter is that the NCA is not economically productive in the way that a school of engineering or college of technology can be. Neither is the College a vote-catching issue.
