Audi, GM, others unite on 20-minute EV charging standard for green drivers in a rush

20-minute EV charger

Fast-charging an EV isn't new in itself, but deciding on a standard for it is. Which is why we're glad to hear that Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, GM, Porsche and Volkswagen have all agreed to a common format for their EV charging ports, the not-very-elegantly-titled DC Fast Charging with a Combined Charging System. Together, the automakers are promising a consistent way to power up a car within 15 to 20 minutes, all without breaking a current Type 1 AC charging implementation. The new format will be demoed at the Electric Vehicle Symposium 26 in Los Angeles starting May 6. Just be aware that your first-generation Focus Electric won't be certain to use the newly universal technology: the first cars to tout the new plug won't be at dealerships until 2013, and the European vehicle association ACEA is only guaranteeing that charging stations on the continent will be using the DC Fast Charging system by 2017. Check after the break for a further look at the port.

Sweat-Eating Bees Are Invading Our Cities [Animals]

While most bees get by just fine supping on nectar from flowers, there's a different kind of bee out in the wild that feeds on sweat—and now, they're moving into cities to make the most of all that humans can offer. More »

Samsung launches new services for the Galaxy S III: Music Hub, S Health and more

Image

Samsung has just taken the wraps off of its highly anticipated Galaxy S III and, in a move similar to Nokia's efforts with the Lumia line, decided to package extra services and features to further differentiate itself from the competition. Mentioned onstage were the S Health "personal wellness app" and an enhanced Music Hub cloud service with access to over 17 million tracks and an iTunes Match-sounding "Scan and Match" feature. Music Hub will launch in seven countries, while the matching feature is supported in six of those. There's also a hub for Games that promises quick tie ins to social gaming and a Video Hub with TV and movies. One other new feature is support for MirrorLink enabled headunits that should bring access to all of these things even while you're driving your car. Finally, there's NFC-based mobile payment support that should get some use among visitors to the Olympic games this summer.

NBC's "Free" Olympics Livestream Is Misleading and a Bummer [Streaming Video]

The ad for the NBC Olympics Live Extra service is so awesome it turns me on. 3500 live hours of sports online or on my tablet or smartphone? Incredible! But like a clever temptress, NBC neglects to mention one thing: Unlike primetime NBC, NBC Olympics Live Extra isn't free. More »

Sony unveils its first Ultrabook, the VAIO T13 / T11

Image

Finally escaping its plate glass prison at CES, Sony's unveiled its first Ultrabook, the VAIO T13 and T11. It's set for release next month and currently packing a Sandy Bridge Intel core i3-2367M processor (no 3rd generation processor just yet), within a 323mm frame that weighs in at around 1.6kg for the 13-inch version. Storage is a hybrid of a 320GB HDD and 32GB SSD, hoping to juggle fast start-up times with capacity, while a HD web cam beams out from above the 13.3-inch (1366 x 768) display -- no word on the res of the 11-incher. There's 4GB of DDR3 memory with Intel's own HD Graphics 3000 on the side and Sony reckons you'll be able eke out up to nine hours from its SSD model. Other connectivity options include Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI output, and USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports. Interested? Then hit up the full gallery of Sony's new Ultrabook below, with a press release thrown in after the break for good measure.

Selena Gomez Has A Fragrance!

selena1_wide.jpg
Pop star, actress, clothing designer, Justin Bieber's girlfriend and now perfumer ? that's right, folks, Selena Gomez is only 19, but she's already a mini mogul. In Touch was there when the lovable star debuted her namesake first fragrance, Selena Gomez, in NYC ? a labor of love she dedicates to her fans, who actually participated in creating the scent! So what was it that made the teen starlet want to delve into the celeb fragrance world? "I've always wanted to ever since Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen had their little body sprays that I was obsessed with," explains Selena. "But my fans were really my inspiration behind it... I just had to wait for the right time because I wanted to create something that could really stand on its own."

The ever-sweet star gushed over the "yummy" bottom note, made up of "coconut, chocolate and vanilla," while the fragrance's first ad campaign ? which depicts Selena (and her gorgeous Maria Lucia Hohan gown) drenched in water while her sleek bottle capped with kisses sits alongside the frame ? reveals a sexier side. "It's very romantic, very sensual... but it's fun and beautiful at the same time," says Selena, adding, "I wanted it to look like I was swimming in the fragrance."

Selena Gomez, the fragrance, hits Macy's stores and macys.com this month!
