Halle Berry's ex arrested after fight at her house

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Halle Berry's ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry was arrested for investigation of battery Thursday after he and the Oscar-winning actress's current boyfriend got into a fight at her Hollywood Hills home, police said.

Aubry, 37, was booked for investigation of a battery, a misdemeanor, and released on $20,000 bail, according to online jail records. He's scheduled to appear in court Dec. 13.

Aubry came to Berry's house Thanksgiving morning and police responded to a report of an assault, said Los Angeles Police Officer Julie Boyer. Aubry was injured in the altercation and was taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.

Emails sent to Berry's publicist, Meredith O'Sullivan, and Aubry's family law attorney, Gary Fishbein, were not immediately returned.

Berry and Aubry have been involved in a custody dispute involving their 4-year-old daughter, Nahla. The proceedings were sealed because the former couple are not married. Both appeared in the case as recently as Nov. 9, but neither side commented on the outcome of the hearing.

Berry has been dating French actor Olivier Martinez, and he said earlier this year that they are engaged.

Boehner Wants 'Obamacare' in Fiscal Cliff Negotiations

President Obama's reelection guaranteed at least one thing for his second term - Obamacare is here here to stay. But that is not going to keep Republicans from trying to chip away at the law. House Speaker John Boehner wrote, in an op-ed, Tuesday that cuts to the president's landmark legislative achievement should be included in efforts to deal with the looming fiscal cliff.

"We can't afford it, and we can't afford to leave it intact. That's why I've been clear that the law has to stay on the table as both parties discuss ways to solve our nation's massive debt challenge," said Boehner.

The Affordable Care Act - or Obamacare as it is more commonly known - has been a favorite target of Republicans. Mitt Romney pledged to work to repeal it. House Republicans have tried to de-fund it.

But the election stopped those efforts in their tracks.

Even House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in the country, told ABC's Diane Sawyer just after election day that plans to do away with the national health law were changed by the election and that Obamacare was the "law of the land." He later clarified over twitter that "Our goal has been and will remain, #fullrepeal." That may be the goal, but his arsenal of political tools makes it a long shot.

Where Boehner does have some room to negotiate is on the fiscal cliff - that cocktail of expiring tax cuts and across-the-board spending hikes set to kick in at the end of the year. Lawmakers are engaged in harried negotiations on a way to avoid all of the spending cuts, although Republicans want to keep some of them, and allowing all of the tax cuts to expire, although Democrats want higher taxes for the wealthy.

The Speaker argued that the President's healthcare law is too expensive and that any serious deal to tackle the deficit should include talks of a full repeal.

"If we're serious about getting our economy moving again, solving our debt and restoring prosperity for American families, we need to repeal Obamacare and enact common-sense, step-by-step reforms that start with lowering the cost of health care," said Boehner.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that a full repeal of the Affordable Care Act will cost $109 billion. However several recent studies suggest that the burden may be shifted to individuals as health insurance premiums continue to rise at an increased rate.

BANGOR, Maine ? Downtown Bangor business owners hope to give big-box stores a run for their money on Black Friday.

More than a dozen downtown shops and vendors will open their doors from 10 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m., and will offer sales and discounts ranging from 10 to 25 percent or more, according to Jason Bird, downtown coordinator for the city.

?The idea behind it is, instead of going to the mall and getting trampled on, pushed and shoved, or having to wait in line for hours on end in the cold, we?re urging people to instead come downtown,? Bird said Wednesday.

Organizers call the event Plaid Friday, which is designed to be a fun, laid-back alternative to Black Friday shopping. Business owners will wear plaid in recognition of the event, and customers are encouraged to do the same, according to Bird.

Participating businesses include Blue Heron, Mexicali Blues, Metropolitan Soul, The Rock and Art Shop, Epic Sports, Central Street Farmhouse, Briar Patch, Maine Jewelry and Art and most other downtown retail shops.

Any shopper who brings a receipt from a downtown business to Giacomo?s or Antique Marketplace & Cafe can get a free coffee, Bird said.

?The shop owners, the retailers are all sort of a mini-community in themselves,? and often work together to support and promote the downtown, he said.

Another locally owned business closer to the mall is planning an event of its own. Bull Moose Music, with 11 locations across the state, will open at 6 a.m. Friday and remain open until midnight Sunday.

The stores will offer several new and special items, ranging from the full Beatles catalog reissued on vinyl to the complete 23-DVD collection of ?Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.?

Former UBS trader sentenced to 7 years for fraud

LONDON - Former UBS trader Kweku Adoboli was convicted and sentenced to seven years in jail on Tuesday for the biggest fraud in British history, which resulted in a loss of $2.3 billion for the Swiss bank.

Ghanaian-born Adoboli, 32, a senior trader on the Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) desk at UBS's investment banking arm in London, admitted trading far in excess of his authorized risk limits and making fictitious book entries to hide his true positions.

The judge said Adoboli had to serve half the sentence before being released on probation, and after taking into account the time already spent in custody would be out of prison in about two and a half years.

The prosecution had portrayed him as a reckless gambler who played God with UBS's money in the arrogant belief that he had the magic touch, driven by a desire to be a star trader with a huge bonus to match.

His defense was that the bank had turned a blind eye to rule-bending as long as profits rolled in and that others knew what he was doing and did not disapprove.

He had pleaded not guilty to two charges of fraud by abuse of position covering the period from October 2008 to his arrest on September 15, 2011.

The jury returned a unanimous verdict of guilty on the main fraud count, holding him directly responsible for the $2.3 billion loss. It related to his unhedged, multi-billion-dollar trades in the summer of 2011.

During the 10-week trial, the court heard that his risk exposure had peaked at $12 billion on August 8, 2011, while his desk's authorized risk limit was $100 million intra-day and $50 million overnight.

The jury found him guilty by a majority of 9-1 on the other count of fraud, which related to unhedged, unauthorized trading in the period from October 2008 to May 2011.

To convict Adoboli of fraud, the jury had to be certain that he had intended to expose UBS to the risk of losses beyond what was normal for a trader.

He was acquitted on four counts of false accounting related to the fake entries he admitted making into UBS's computer systems to hide his true positions, for which the jury needed to be certain that he had acted for personal financial gain.

Adoboli had always disputed the prosecution argument that he was driven by a desire for a bigger bonus.

"The amount of money involved was staggering, impacting hugely on the bank but also on their employees, shareholders and investors. This was not a victimless crime," said Andrew Penhale, deputy head of fraud at the Crown Prosecution Service, after the verdict.

Wearing a suit and tie, Adoboli stood in the glass dock at the back of the courtroom at Southwark Crown Court while the jury delivered their verdicts. His father John, who had travelled to Britain from Ghana to support his son throughout the lengthy trial, was seated directly behind the dock.

Adoboli bowed his head when the foreman of the jury gave the first verdict, which was on the main count of fraud. He was then taken into custody and returned later to hear the five other verdicts. He was not given an opportunity to leave the dock to embrace his father.

Judge Brian Keith said he would sentence Adoboli to a term in prison later on Tuesday.

Adoboli revealed the losses to his managers in an email on September 14, 2011, and was arrested in the early hours of the following day at UBS offices. His trial started a year later.

A swathe of top UBS executives including former Chief Executive Oswald Gruebel, have resigned, been sacked, or sidelined following the scandal, but the bank and its managers strongly denied encouraging traders to break the rules.

The bank has since slashed the size of its investment banking business, though the ETFs desk has survived.

UBS shares were down 1.5 percent at 14.28 francs at 1422 GMT, while the European banking sector index was down 1.4 percent.
