CULLMAN ? History will be made Friday night for Cullman Christian School when the Lions play football for the first time in school history.

The Lions have become sanctioned to participate in the sport of six-man football in the Christian Football Association. The CFA is a sister league of the Alabama Christian Education Athletic Association (ACEEA) in which Cullman Christian has been a participant in the sports of basketball, volleyball and track and field.

Cullman Christian will play Conecuh Springs Friday at 7 p.m. at the Cullman City Youth Stadium, which is located across the street from West Elementary School. The school has received permission from the Cullman Parks and Recreation Department, who owns the stadium, for the Lions to play their 5-game home schedule in their inaugural season.

CCS is under the direction of Chase Cantrell. Cantrell is a 2005 graduate of Hamilton High School and got his physical education degree attending Athens State University.

The Lions have 15 players on their inaugural roster and decided to take the 6-man division instead of 8-man football because of the depth issue.

Six-man football is in its third year in Alabama. This brand of football was born in the mid-1930s in the state of Nebraska then found its way inside the state of Texas. Other states that have six-man prep football include Florida, Colorado, Montana, New Mexico, Wyoming besides Nebraska and Texas.

The sport is played on an 80-yard field. Scoring is similar to 11-man football with a touchdown being worth six points. Extra points consist of one point for a run or pass conversion while kicking in this division is two points. Field goals?are worth four points instead of the regular three in?AHSAA football.

All players on offense are eligible for?pass plays. The passing game requires the ball to be thrown forward and travel one yard from the line of scrimmage.

Cullman Christian's first team consists of seniors Logan Knopp, Blake Dingler, Jaxson Murcks,?junior player Will Hogue, sophomore Miles Rakestraw, freshman Luke Barlow, Will Sieg, Jackson Holbrook, Noah Watson, Grant Wideman, Brett Perry, Greg LaBlanc, Duncan Warner and eighth graders Houston Thrasher and Ethan Holland.
