In type 2 diabetes the cells become resistant to the action of insulin, and the pancreas is unable to make enough insulin to overcome this resistance. The reason behind this is uncertain, although as in type 1 diabetes, it's believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role in the development of type 2. The development of type 2 diabetes is linked to being over weight, but not everyone with type 2 is overweight.

At the time of pregnancy, the placenta produces hormones to sustain pregnancy. These hormones make the cells more resistant to insulin. As the placenta grows larger in the second and third trimesters, it secretes more of these hormones which make it even harder for insulin to do its job.

It was Dante who wrote that ?the hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in times of great moral crises remain neutral.?

While many things can be said about Wendell Potter, remaining neutral about mandatory health care insurance for all Americans is not one.

Unlike hundreds of millions of Americans who have formed an opinion on the controversial Affordable Health Care Act now before the United State Supreme Court, almost none can offer the perspective Potter does.

?You all heard about how the health insurance law will lead to a government takeover of the health insurance industry,? he told a crowd assembled Thursday night at the United Church of Christ in South Whitehall. ?It?s a lie. How do I know? Because I?m the one who came up with it.?

As the former head of corporate communications for health-insurance giant Cigna, Potter said he was paid handsomely to manipulate the public and press in a massive campaign to defraud mandatory health insurance coverage for all Americans for the simplest of all reasons.

?Profits,? he said.

Death panels, Medicare cuts, declining employment and socialized medicine ? you can thank Potter for it.

?It was me and people like me who concocted these stories to manipulate you,? he said.

The paychecks Potter takes home these days are a lot less than the ones at Cigna, but then again, the company could afford to pay him well.

?During 2008 Cigna recorded a 346 percent profit,? he said with a serene candor Thursday night that left some in the audience gasping.

He attributed those profits not to business acumen, but rather an unrelenting desire to make their bottom line attractive to Wall Street investors at the expense of Americans' health.

Potter became a whistle-blower against the health-insurance industry gradually, although his moment of decision, as he called it, came over two incidents, including the 2007 case of 17-year-old Natlie Sarkisyan, who died shortly after Cigna initially denied her coverage for a liver transplant as a result of cancer.

?It got to the point where I was utterly disgusted with myself,? he said.

But his presentation Thursday night was not so much about the past or even any personal experiences as it was a plea for the crowd to understand ?the importance of protecting the new health care law, Medicare and Medicaid.?

The laws, he said during his roughly 45-minute speech, hold health insurance companies accountable, make health care more affordable, stabilize the nation?s economy and will not increase the nation?s deficit.

?The insurance industry and their cronies will do whatever it can to maintain their massive profits,? he said during speech to discredit any meaningful reform, including the corruption of members of Congress and even the nation?s highest court.

In 2002, Justin Timberlake blew everyone's minds when he dropped Justified, his star-making solo album. It propelled him from tween-dream poster boy to legitimate pop star.

Exactly 10 years later, there's another young singer who is looking to make the same leap. When Justin Bieber dropped "Boyfriend" earlier this week, he laid down the gauntlet and declared his pop-star manhood.

His transition is one that Timberlake faced a decade ago as he looked to carve a new path for himself in a post-'NSYNC world. With grinding, ear-busting production from the Neptunes and Timbaland, the onetime boy-bander created an album that sounded unlike anything his fans had heard before. Sure, he had teased it on 'NSYNC's last album, Celebrity, but this album was different — it was all Timberlake. It was sexy and definitely much edgier lyrically, with him singing about girls and sex in a more-mature way.

At the time, he faced the incredibly difficult pop conundrum of having to grow up right before an audience. That's the challenge Bieber now faces. At 18, he can't stray too far from his My World days, but in order to grow as an artist and a person, he also can't make "Baby" over and over again.

And, honestly, who would want him to? Edgy and sexy feel like the innate next step for the teen star, with Usher as his mentor — a dude who made a name for himself singing songs about the things he does in the bedroom and flaunting his abs all over town. Although, it's interesting to note that Bieber chose to follow in Timberlake's footsteps. A little history lesson: Timberlake once was in a bidding war to sign Bieber on as his protégé. Usher won, and the rest is history.

"Boyfriend," Bieber's lead single off his Believe album, set for release later this year, is straight from the Timberlake blueprint. With production from Mike Posner and Mason Levy, the song is the perfect blend of hip-hop, vintage Michael Jackson-flavored R&B and pop. It's not a far cry from JT's "Like I Love You" thematically: A young man meets a young woman and uses a song, full of bleeps and beats, to declare all the reasons they should be together. Consider all the young women across the world sold on every one of his swag-heavy arguments.

It's easy to harp on Bieber for playing it very close to the Timberlake playbook. But, why shouldn't he? Timberlake seems more focused on movies than music; Bieber's filling the blue-eyed soul void left by Timberlake's absence on the charts. And with A-list assistance from Timbaland (yes, Timberlake's producer), Diplo and will.i.am, Believe just might make us all believe in the power of Bieber.

Wellington Real Estate Agent Shane Ross Suspended | Stuff.co.nz

A Wellington real estate agent has had his licence suspended for three months for his handling of a deposit on a Lower Hutt commercial property.

Shane Ross received a $6164 property lease deposit into his personal bank account by mistake then failed to transfer the full amount into his agency's trust account as he should have, says the Real Estate Agents Disciplinary Tribunal.

Mr Ross pleaded guilty to wilfully contravening Real Estate Act rules.

The tribunal said the deposit was paid into Mr Ross' account two days after he had finished working for Pelorus Real Estate.

He emailed Malcolm Morris, his former boss at Pelorus, two days later saying that as his account was overdrawn, some of the deposit money had been "sucked up" and he deposited only $3789 in the Pelorus Trust account.

The $2383 he retained was the commission he believed he would have earned on the lease deal.

When interviewed by an investigator Mr Ross confirmed his account was only overdrawn by about $900 when the deposit was paid in and he could have paid more to Pelorus than he did.

Mr Morris told the tribunal that he was not planning to pay Mr Ross any share of the commission because Mr Ross owed the company about $20,000 for advances against future commissions.

The tribunal said Mr Ross must have known money paid into his account by mistake could not properly belong to him.

Its penalty included a deterrent element to emphasise the need for strict compliance with rules relating to the money received.

"Members of the public pay large amounts of money to real estate agents so that there must be absolute trust and integrity from the real estate industry."

The tribunal suspended Mr Ross for three months and ordered him to pay $2383 to Mr Morris and $1000 costs.

Commenting on the decision, Mr Morris said he was "flabbergasted with what he [Mr Ross] did".

Mr Ross, who has left the agency he joined after leaving Pelorus, would not comment.

Hedy Lamarr: Hollywood's secret weapon inventor

Hedy Lamarr played much more than "the most beautiful woman in the world" as an Austrian-American actress during Hollywood's Golden Age. The mathematically-minded inventor first learned about military technology from dinner party conversations between her arms-manufacturer husband and Nazi German generals, before escaping to America where she eventually invented a new torpedo guidance system for the U.S. Navy.

The actress-inventor's life almost seems like a no-brainer for a Hollywood action hero makeover, given her brush with Nazis and behind-the-scenes efforts to aid the U.S. war effort during World War II. But her life is also fitting as a tragic drama ? the glamour of the silver screen blinded most people to her inventor's passion that would lead to a patented "frequency hopping" breakthrough still used in civilian and military technologies today.

"The reason she set up inventor's room in her house and pursued inventing as a hobby was that she didn't drink, didn't smoke and didn't like parties," said Richard Rhodes, author of "Hedy's Folly: The Life and Breakthrough Inventions of Hedy Lamarr, the Most Beautiful Woman in the World" (Doubleday, 2011).

Any inventors willing to look beyond Lamarr's beauty would have found a kindred spirit, Rhodes said. She embodied the stereotype of the classic inventor who loved to tinker ? her lesser-known inventions include an instant fizzy soda cube and a trash receptacle attached to tissue boxes.

Her most recognized work came from co-inventing a frequency-hopping wireless signal for guiding U.S. Navy torpedoes to their targets. But even after Lamarr enlisted the help of fellow inventor George Antheil and received a "Secret Communications System" patent in 1942, the U.S. Navy ignored the breakthrough until its engineers rediscovered the patent in the mid-1950s.

Lamarr's motivation for frequency-hopping likely first arose during the Viennese dinner parties held by her first husband, the Austrian arms manufacturer Fritz Mandal, in the years leading up to World War II. "She was perfectly positioned as Mandal's wife ? as an arm piece at the fancy dinners they gave ? to hear discussions about what technology the Germans were developing, how they worked and what their problems were," Rhodes told InnovationNewsDaily.

After Lamarr escaped her obsessive husband and headed for a new acting career in Hollywood, she grew furious over reports of German submarines torpedoing ships filled with refugees. She first suggested going to Washington, D.C., to testify about her knowledge of German technology before the National Inventor's Council, but nobody took her seriously.

Luckily, Lamarr met and recruited Antheil to help develop her idea for frequency hopping (also known as spread spectrum) ? a concept for having wireless radio signals switch quickly among many different frequency channels so that enemies could not jam the signal. Antheil's background as a musician and tinkerer came in handy when he came up with a workable concept similar to player-piano rolls that could synchronize the switching among 88 frequencies.

The Germans had their own wire-guided system for torpedoes, but Lamarr's wireless technology never saw action during World War II. Still, the U.S. Navy eventually applied the jamming-proof technology to radios used during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and it went on to shape modern technologies such as GPS, Bluetooth in headsets and phones, and U.S. military guided missiles.

"Most of her ideas were interesting but trivial," Rhodes said. "This one was fundamental."
