With 18.3 million Internet users, Thailand in 2010 generated Bt52 billion in e-commerce transactions. Rocket Internet is hopeful that its Lazada.co.th will become the top e-commerce website in the country. In March, it uncorked its first Southeast Asian website in Indonesia.

Johannes Friedric von Rua, chief executive officer of Lazada Co, the operator of the Thai website, said yesterday that in the past five years, Thailand's e-commerce industry had shown average annual growth of 25-30 per cent. In the first half of this year, transactions expanded 22 per cent from the same half last year.

"The second half should show 30-per-cent growth, after greater confidence in online security and greater access to the Internet, particularly through smart phones," he said.

After four months of trial, Lazada has amassed more than 20,000 items in 12 categories, with about 1,500 brand partners including DKSH, Unilever, Samsung and BlackBerry.

"Over the past few years, Rocket Internet has become a strong partner for numerous successful companies in supporting them with our unparalleled online expertise, network of contacts and equity. Some of its best-known projects include Groupon, Zalando, Wimdu and eDarling," he said.
