Hole ripped in church during Heidelberg Township crash

A roughly 3-foot round hole exists in Mount Carmel Lutheran Church's parish hall after a tractor-trailer hit a nearby utility pole and ripped the electrical wires from the building Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Jacobs Mill and Old Hanover roads in Heidelberg Township, Southwestern Regional Police Officer Brandon Nolan said.

The truck driver, Kenneth Thornburg of Tunica, Miss., was attempting to turn from Jacobs Mill Road onto Old Hanover Road, Nolan said. It was too sharp of a turn and the truck struck a utility pole, pulling the wires out of the church.

The state Department of Transportation has set up a split detour for the Route 116 bridge closure. The driver of the tractor-trailer attempted to use the same route on the way back, Nolan said.

Truck drivers keep bumping the utility pole since the detour went into effect, said Helen Warner, secretary of the church. It looks like a tree with the bark scrapped off.

Church officials knew it was only a matter of time before something would happen.

"Was it really his fault? No," she said of the truck driver. "He's the one who hit it hard enough to make it happen."

The church will not have electricity at least until Thursday, Warner said. And it's going to be a major project to fix the hole.

She's just thankful no one was hurt. Everything else can be repaired.

"It was enough excitement for one day," Warner said.

Detour route for Route 116 bridge closure

Route 116 is closed for a bridge replacement in Spring Grove, and the state Department of Transportation has set up a split detour.

Route 116 east: Driver should use Lehman Road, Stoverstown Road, Salem Road, Route 616, Route 30 to Route 116.

Route 116 west: Use Hanover Street, Menges Mill Road, Old Hanover Road, Jacobs Mill Road to Route 116.
