Cash-strapped motorists are taking basic car maintenance checks into their own hands in order to save on their motoring costs.
Research has highlighted that it is women taking car maintenance into their own hands, with a rise in the number of female drivers likely to reach for their toolbox when faced with car trouble.
A survey by RAC revealed that as many as 60% of women drivers said they had carried out at least one basic repair or maintenance task on their vehicle, while 27% argued that they were confident in their abilities to carry out maintenance work.
Further figures from the survey revealed that around 20% of women regularly check tyre treads and tyre pressure, while 2% would bill themselves as ?DIY car maintenance experts.?
Among the reasons cited for shunning local garages for basic maintenance checks included the belief that garages ?ripped off? unsuspecting motorists. However, 47% of women argued that they would send their motors straight to a garage should a problem arise.
RAC patrol woman Louise French said: ?It?s great to see more girls are getting to grips with their cars and taking on repairs and maintenance themselves.
?Doing simple repairs, asking friends or relatives for help or advice, and taking extra care with vehicle maintenance are all now commonplace as drivers look for any way possible to cut the cost of running their cars.?
Recent research by the Green Flag Breakdown Service revealed that UK motorists are still reluctant to investigate what lies under the bonnet of their cars, with drivers failing to perform essential car maintenance checks, despite the fact that winter weather can provide some of the most hazardous driving conditions for motorists.
Figures released by Saga earlier this year highlighted that the number of people carrying out basic car maintenance has almost halved over the last five years, dropping from 17% to 10%.
