I have always loved Bruges. The pretty canals, cobbled streets laced with chocolate shops, gothic architecture?and of course, you?ve guessed it the food and drink. Bruges has many specialities, chocolate, waffles, moules-frites and of course beer. May bank holiday approached and my husband and I decided to flee the Capital and sample the best Bruges had to offer. We were not disappointed?

After a civilised train journey a la Eurostar with one painless change at Brussels, we arrived at our hotel ready to drop our bags and head out for some Flemish fodder. ?The hotel is very central?everything is ten minutes from here?I suggest you start with the main Square, it is very close.? ?Great, sounds perfect!?- My husband was already out the door?breakfast seemed a very distant memory by now. Before we knew it we were ordering Flemish Stew and frites, washed down with a local beer, Zot.

You may be thinking to yourselves that this sounds really heavy? Stodgy? Too basic? And yes you would be right but it works. The medallions of beef are so tender that when cooked right they fall apart and the rich gravy that they are submerged in is perfectly cut through by the refreshing Zot. What could be better? We left very satisfied and ready to face the art galleries and canal trips that we had planned for the afternoon.

Bruges is famed for its many beers, every kind of beer that you can imagine they produce, much to my husband?s delight. Shelves upon shelves display many different flavours, Cherry being one of the most popular. It?s the perfect option for all those people (me) that haven?t quite got the hang of beer yet, it?s not too beery if you know what I mean.

Another Belgian speciality is of course chocolate and Bruges is littered with chocolate shops selling every kind you can imagine-heaven! Having dragged my husband around not one but TWO art galleries it was then time to traipse the streets for chocolate to take home for friends and family and of course all of this had to be sampled.

There is nothing better than milk chocolate filled with crunchy praline or creamy white chocolate truffles. The Belgians don?t just stop there, no, why not have your chocolate melted on to a perfectly baked waffle. We just had to stop for one. My husband doesn?t like puddings so he wasn?t particularly fussed by this, myself on the other hand, couldn?t possibly leave without tasting one! So simple but so good. The melted belgian chocolate and lightly sugar dusted waffle was a match made in heaven.

Ok so we ate a lot, drank a bit too much but was it worth it?YES. Bruges not only has great food and drink on offer but it?s pretty canals, leafy parks and horse driven carts make this an enchanting place and well worth a weekend visit-you?ll love it.
